We recently connected with Yanika – the face and super mum behind small business biglittlethings. With a perfect selection of curated goods for mum & bub, to supporting Hyperemesis Gravidarum Australia, there’s nothing little about Yanika’s brand and vision for the future.
Ethical & environmentally friendly in all aspects of business, with a focus on minimalist style & functionality, biglittlethings have you sorted on what you need (and what you didn't know you wanted) for the new bundle of joy in your life.
Tell us a little about yourself and your business:
My name is Yanika & I’m a mum to our 14month old daughter; Alia & our 8 year old Sausage dog named Kingston. We live in a beautiful suburb of Melbourne called Yarraville. Prior to becoming a mum, I worked in Retail Management for almost 15 years!
biglittlethings is a beautiful online experience for mama’s & mama’s to be to find a consciously curated collection of brands & products. It is also a place for anyone buying gifts for them & their babes to find the perfect premade bundles when they have no idea what to get.
What inspired you to create your brand?
The idea for biglittlethings came about when I was pregnant with Alia; I suffered from Hyperemesis Gravadarum (or HG) for the duration of my pregnancy so I was basically bed ridden for 9 months & vomiting constantly so I couldn’t go out & buy the things I wanted to get for our new baby so I spent time trawling the internet collating all these different products from various stores, paying for so much postage & thought I wish there was just one place I could go to for my kind of taste in baby products! My partner; Josh said to me; you should create one! And the brainstorming began & then almost 2 years later biglittlethings was launched!
My top three goals were to create a beautiful online space for anyone to shop, to create a beautiful gifting (for yourself or for someone else) whenever you received your biglittlethings the packaging would be so special, & the third thing was to give back which is why we donate 5% of our profits to HG Australia.
How long have you been in business for?
We’re newbies! We launched about a month ago!
Do you find it difficult competing against your larger competitors?
I get asked this a bit especially being in the baby industry as it is just so huge & ever expanding however the larger competitors were almost a driver to create biglittlethings as I didn’t want to go into the big baby department stores & be overwhelmed with the million & one options – I felt there was a need for focused collection of beautiful products that share alignment & I’m so proud that 90% of our brands are small businesses, owned by women/boss mama’s and are just beautiful people to work alongside of and represent. And at the heart of it all is a little something extra that I feel you can’t get from our competitors. (if only the Instagram algorithm could see that too!)
What’s your favourite part of being a small business owner?
Talking to our customers (they’re so supportive & beautiful people) and seeing them open their biglittlethings boxes, that will never get old.
The hardest part? Not having enough hours in the day to do everything you want to do alongside mum life.
What’s your must-have product? Oh my goodness, this is so hard to answer!
At the moment for me it’s a tie between our Zarpar Bebe carrier (teething clingy baby) & our babe blends from the Clē Collective (tired & teethy are on repeat).
What’s something not many people know about you? Something that people may not know is that it doesn’t matter if you’re buying a gift, or something for yourself, you will receive your order in our beautiful custom branded boxes! So, you can feel like your treating yourself or can send the gift straight to the special someone.
How does being a mama drive you to pursue your business’ vision? How does it not! It is literally the reason I began this journey & the reason that keeps me going!
Tell us a little about the sustainable aspects of your brand: This is something always on the forefront of my mind & something we strive to keep being better at every day. But some of the things we do are;
- We’ve focused on quality over quantity with our products that you can pass down, pass on & cherish for years to come instead of ending up in landfills.
- All our packaging & printing are either recyclable, biodegradable & printed with vegetable based inks.
- Our shipping labels are all biodegradable.
- You have the option to forego the beautiful packaging (that’s sustainable too) & get our bare box or In The Buff Satchel from the better packaging co.
- We don’t print invoices as they get emailed to you.
- We encourage our customers to reuse, repurpose, regift our boxes & we include a recyclable sticker to cover the shipping label so you can use the box again & again.
Your weapon of choice... If you could only choose one, forever, which would it be – coffee, wine or chocolate? Chocolate forever. (Pana Organic to be specific!)
